What $3.8 Million Buys You in California

This house was designed by Pedro Joseph de Lemos, a founder of the Allied Arts Guild and the director of the museum and art galleries at Stanford University. Mr. de Lemos was an artist and architect who built a number of houses in the neighborhood, including his own residence, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden, a public park that includes a historic home and gardens, is less than half a mile away; Stanford is a five-minute drive.

Size: 2,284 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,642

Indoors: The owners have worked to preserve many of the original details, including a brightly colored stone porch and the storybook-style stucco facade.

The hand-carved front door opens into a tiled foyer. To the left is a staircase with a built-in closet that has more hand-carved doors and iron detailing.

To the right of the foyer is the living room, where an original leaded-glass window facing the street has been preserved. The fireplace has a white-brick surrounded inset with niches, and French doors open to an outdoor deck.

Adjacent to the living room is a dining room with parquet floors. A door leads into the kitchen, which has medallion-patterned tile floors, a desk built into a corner and an area for a table near windows overlooking the deck.

On the second floor are three bedrooms and a family room. At the top of the landing is the primary bedroom; across the hall is a full bathroom. The other two bedrooms on this level have deep closets and are large enough to hold queen-size beds.

Next to the primary bedroom is a family room with a staircase to the third level and an en suite bathroom with blue-and-white tiles.

The third-floor bedroom has vaulted ceilings and a built-in window seat, as well as two closets.

Outdoor space: The kitchen and living room have doors that open to a deck with space for a dining table, shaded by a pergola. The sellers added a second outdoor entertaining area just beyond the deck, with seating around a tiled fountain. The detached garage holds two cars.

The owners of this home commissioned Hagy Belzberg, an architect who was a protégé of Frank Gehry, to rebuild it from the ground up using steel-troweled plaster, glass and galvanized aluminum. The property is off Benedict Canyon, north of the Holmby Hills neighborhood and east of Bel Air. Mulholland Drive is about four miles north; Sunset Boulevard is roughly the same distance to the south.

Size: 3,503 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,083

Indoors: A gate with a pedestrian entrance separates the front yard, landscaped with succulents, from the sidewalk.

The front door opens into a foyer with high ceilings. Beyond a partition is an open living area with Brazilian cherry floors and exposed beams that span the width of the space. At the center of the room is a gas stove on a poured-concrete platform; a wall of windows and sliding-glass doors faces the pool area outside.

On the right side of the living area is a door to the kitchen, which has a separate breakfast area with a built-in banquette; stainless steel appliances, including a Wolf countertop range; and more glass doors that open to an outdoor dining area.

To the left of the foyer is a hallway connecting two guest rooms, a full bathroom and a den. One of the bedrooms has built-in furniture made by a children’s design studio. Next to this room is the bathroom, which has a combination tub and shower tiled in shades of green and purple. At the far end of the hall is the den, which has its own bathroom.

This estate has been well maintained over the past century, with current and previous owners preserving the home’s original wood beams and decorative tiles, while updating the kitchen, bathrooms and grounds. It is in the Panorama Heights section of North Tustin, about four and a half miles from the historic center of the city of Orange. Peters Canyon Regional Park, with more than 300 acres including a reservoir and hiking trails, is about a 10-minute drive.

Size: 5,909 square feet

Price per square foot: $635

Indoors: An ivy-draped wall separates the property from the street. A wooden gate opens to the driveway, and a brick path leads through a set of ornate wooden doors to a central courtyard.

On the right side of the courtyard, wood-and-glass doors open to the kitchen, which has Spanish-tile floors and built-in mahogany cabinetry. At the center of the room is a red La Cornue range with a delft-tile-inspired backsplash. The pewter countertops were custom-made.

To the left of the kitchen is a formal dining room that also opens to the courtyard. Through the dining room is a living room with a stone fireplace, exposed ceiling beams and Venetian plaster walls. The living room faces the courtyard as well, and has a balcony overlooking the grounds and pool area.

Beyond the living room is a foyer with a tile floor; off it is a hallway that connects the downstairs bedrooms and a wood-paneled study. At the near end of the hall is a spacious guest suite with a sky-blue ceiling and an en suite bathroom with green tile and a claw-foot soaking tub. At the other end of the hall is another guest suite.

A circular staircase with a wrought-iron banister rises from the foyer to the second level, which functions as an expansive primary suite. The bedroom has hardwood floors inlaid with a Greek-key pattern, as well as a private terrace with views of Catalina Island. The en suite bathroom has a marble soaking tub set underneath a window. Through a walk-in closet is a second terrace with views of the grounds.

Just off the central courtyard are interior steps leading down to the lower level of the house, where there is a family room.

Outdoor space: From the terrace off the living room, a path winds down to the pool area. The pool is surrounded by stone, with plenty of space for lounging and a built-in barbecue. The wide lawn that separates the main house and the pool has been used for weddings and other events; the property also has a number of smaller gardens and fountains. The detached garage has space for three cars.
